Indiana Hoosiers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes : 63-63, 70-70 and 78-80 after 2 OTs (played on 2018-02-23) Score at the half: 33-33.   There were great ball movements on both sides of the court in Bloomington, Indiana on Friday, Feb. 23rd, 2018. Ohio State of Coach Chris Holtmann had a rather comfortable advantage in the middle of the first half (12-19 and even 14-26 later on). Indiana of Coach Archie Miller came back in the race a few moments later and the scoreboard showed 33-33 at the break. Both OSU talented players Keita Bates-Diop (6'7", forward, age 22) and Kaleb Wesson (6'9", forward, age 18) looked fit and well in the first half. Justin Smith (6'7", forward, age 19) had spectacular plays and dunked the ball for Indiana . He was helped by Juwan Morgan (6'8", forward, age 20) and Robert Johnson (6'3", guard, age 22), hitting crucial shots for the Hoosiers . After a new strong start by the Buckeyes early in the second...

U.S. College basketball - Season 2017-18 - Second review (December 2017 and January 2018)

Here are the summaries of two good NCAA basketball games watched on YouTube lately: Clemson Tigers vs. Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns : 89-60 (played on 2017-12-22) Score at the half: 43-28. Clemson had a quick start in this game which took place at the Littlejohn Coliseum in Clemson, South Carolina: the scoreboard showed 5-0 after a few minutes. Louisiana reacted well and evened the game afterwards. Ragin' Cajuns ' player Frank Bartley IV (6'3", guard, age 23) performed very well and Louisiana even took an advantage: 7-8. Donte Grantham (6'8", forward, age 22) was pretty efficient for the Tigers in the beginning of the game, marked by strong and well organized defenses on both sides. The Tigers played as a team and hit shots after having isolated players. Clemson recorded a 8-0 run, forcing Louisiana 's Head Coach Bob Marlin to take a much needed timeout (15-8). Both defenses remained impressive. Frank Bartley was definitely the Ra...

EuroMillions League - Proximus Spirou Charleroi dominates Antwerp Giants on Jan. 16th, 2018

Image
Bert and one of his sons were offered some tickets to attend the EuroMillions League game between Proximus Spirou Charleroi of Head Coach Brian Lynch and Antwerp Giants of Belgian Coach Roel Moors held at the Spiroudome on Tuesday, Jan. 16th, 2018. This Belgian basketball shock drove a rather small attendance of around 1,500 basketball fans in the large arena of Charleroi, Belgium which can seat 6,000 people. Giants ' Belgian talent Hans Vanwijn (6'9", power forward, born in 1995) was well present on the court and wore a mask to protect his broken nose. The game started very well for the hosts. Led by a pretty efficient Rasko Katic (6'10", center, born in 1980) in the paint, Spirou Charleroi quickly built a rather interesting advantage. The experienced Serbian center who won the silver medal at the FIBA World Cup 2014 looked as impressive as ever and scored the first 6 points for Spirou . The home squad played well and was pretty efficient offensively....

U.S. College basketball - Season 2017-18 - First review (October and November 2017)

Several NCAA basketball games, watched in streaming or on YouTube , were already on my list in late 2017:   Michigan State Spartans vs. Ferris State Bulldogs : 80-72 (played on 2017-10-26) Score at the half: 35-38.   This exhibition game held at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan started with a great dunk by Spartan player Miles Bridges (6'7", guard/forward, age 19) right after the jump ball... Nevertheless, Ferris State played quickly in the first minutes of the game and the Bulldogs were quite efficient on both ends of the court. The scoreboard suddenly showed 2-12, forcing MSU 's legendary coach Tom Izzo (23rd year at the head of the Spartans ) to take a first timeout with just 4 minutes played in the first half. Jaren Jackson Jr. (6'11", forward, age 18) played tough in defense and had two impressive blocks to keep the Spartans in the race. Miles Bridges and Cassius Winston (6'0", guard, age 20) also put some great e...

FIBA Europe Cup 2017-18 - Round Five - Regular Season Group G: Belfius Mons-Hainaut (BEL) defeated by Demir Insaat Buyukcekmece Basketbol (TUR) on Nov. 14th, 2017

Image
Nice crowd at the mons.arena on Day 5 of the FIBA Europe Cup Group G regular season... A basketball game with a band playing during 40 minutes and with enthusiastic fans is truly enjoyable. After having enjoyed a delicious Belgian waffle, I could sit just a few rows behind the Demir Insaat bench and get ready for the tip-off! The game started at a rather slow pace and with many ups and downs. In the first quarter, the large attendance present at the mons.arena actually saw many more ups from the Turkish side, led by a very athletic and mobile Evaldas Kairys (6'10", 2.07 m, forward/center, born in 1990). The strong Lithuanian international player scored in the paint and convincingly intercepted the ball to offer Demir Insaat a nice advantage from the very beginning of the game. The Turkish team of Head Coach Ozhan Civgin traveled to Mons, Belgium without US point guard Erving Walker (5'8", 1.73 m, point guard, born in 1990, Florida '12). We were told tha...

Summary of Belgium's Regional Division 1 game CEP Fleurus vs. SFX Saint Michel Verviers played on Friday, Oct. 13th, 2017

Image
In the late seventies and early eighties, a CEP Fleurus vs. SFX Verviers game would have been highlighted in the sport section of all newspapers in Belgium. SFX Verviers even won the Belgian Basketball Cup in 1980 (73-72 against Sunair Oostende ). CEP Fleurus vs. SFX Saint Michel Verviers is now a top game in Regional Division 1 in Southern Belgium. Played in front of a sparse attendance, this game started at high pace for CEP Fleurus . Boosted by their coach Fabien Muylaert , the CEPmen quickly digged a large gap. After 10 minutes, the scoreboard showed 32-12. SFX Saint Michel Verviers led by Nicolas Tsasa , a former CEP player, could not find any real solution. On the contrary, CEP Fleurus with Burkina Faso's former national team captain Moussa Ouattara as well as reality show celebrity and former player at Benetton Fribourg Olympic in the Swiss LNA Senna Hounhanou performed very well and played very quickly. Despite some nice SFX efforts in defense, CEP...

BSCA Take-Off Trophy in Charleroi, Belgium - AEK Athens, medi Bayreuth, Spirou Charleroi and Tsmoki Minsk in action on Sep. 9th, 2017

Image
AEK Athens (GRE) vs. medi Bayreuth (GER): 90-85 What a surprise to see so few basketball fans at the Spiroudome in Charleroi, Belgium on Sep. 9th! Entrance was free but, despite a group of six enthusiastic members of the AEK  Athens ' fan club from London sitting and cheering in one corner of the arena and a small group of five to ten supporters of medi Bayreuth behind the bench of the Basketball Bundesliga team, not many people had showed up around noon on the second day of the BSCA Take-Off Trophy competition. Too bad for the hoops fans and observers who have missed some exceptional basketball action! The first game of the day was underway when I entered the Spiroudome . I could follow this game very closely since my son and I were able to sit right behind the bench of medi Bayreuth and could listen to the pep talks and excellent analyses of Head Coach Raoul Korner . Korner 's squad finished the first quarter on top by the closest margin. Led by Germany's i...
